SOME DETAIL ABOUT THE STORY................................

The issue of truth, from three different perspectives, was explored in last night’s episode of “Breaking Bad,” “Kafkaesque”.

First, there is the truth as Jesse sees it. As he and Walt deliver the week’s shipment of meth for Gus, Jesse comes to believe that the terms of Gus’ deal are not fair to he and Walt, and boy, does he moan about it. Walt is irritated that his young partner cannot be satisfied with being a mere millionaire. Jesse wants more, and he’s determined to get more.

Walt’s perspective of the truth is one of intellectual clarity. He finally pieces it together, figuring out that the person responsible for Hank’s attempted murder, Gus, also anonymously warned Hank moments before he was ambushed. In a typically terse meeting with Gus, Walt tells him that not only did he protect his investment in getting the Cousins off his back, he’s using the resulting friction between the U.S. and Mexican drug cartels to profit more for himself. As such, Walt demands a “renegotiation” of the terms for services rendered. Gus is only too happy to extend Walt’s “contract” to a full year, perhaps even beyond that. In the aftermath, Walt is so dizzy from his increased entanglement with Gus that he almost crashes his car into a semi.

Then there is Skyler’s interpretation of the truth. She is feeling for her sister Marie, who’s facing enormous medical bills for Hank’s pending rehab (his work benefits won’t cover much of what he needs). And something about the way Walt has been acting throughout Hank’s ordeal makes her suspect that Walt is somehow at the root of his brother-in-law’s problems. Thus, she plays fast and loose with the truth behind her offer to Marie to pay for Hank’s medical costs, telling her that Walt has amassed a large sum of money from gambling winnings. Walt is stunned that she has concocted such a vivid depiction for Marie, but above all, is happy that his “job” will help Hank in his hour of need. But assuaging his deep guilt may be quite another story.

Back to Jesse. Further frustrated by Saul’s attempts to get him to launder his money, he gets Badger and Skinny Pete excited about the prospect of dealing meth again (admittedly, getting those two excited isn’t that hard). First, he gets the two of them to pose as recovering addicts in his group therapy sessions so they can “subliminally” advertise their product to Jesse’s fragile fellow ex-addicts. But it is his gambit at the lab that may prove to bite him big time: he lies to Walt about the weight of the latest batch they cook, plans to take the surplus for himself.

Just how much trouble Jesse’s latest bonehead move causes for him and Walt will be revealed in next week’s episode. And that’s the truth.
