Side stories: This Dana Walsh tangent with her derelict ex-lover is actually starting to grow on me. Not so much from the predictable angle that he’s going to keep asking her to get him intel, but to see how Cole Ortiz handles the situation when he finds out. The other side stories are pretty snooze-worthy, with all that’s happening to President Hassan’s (Anil Kapoor) entourage. Maybe if he just screamed out “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?!” just once, I might be happier.

Alright, so we’re a third of the way through the 8th season of 24 and I think this is a good time to take inventory and predict it’s final ranking among its peer seasons.

Overall Threat: 24 oscillates between assassination attempts, terrorism, bio weapons and nuclear weapons. This nuclear fuel rod situation doesn’t even feel dangerous at all and it’s going to be hard for me to jump out of my seat given all the craziness that went down in days 1-7.

Bad guys: While the threat is a little bit of a bore, the bad guys are pretty cool. This season is doing a good job of simultaneously having two groups of villains. Between the Russians and the Islamic extremists, we don’t know yet who will emerge as the ultimate villain and both groups seem just as determined to get their way, no matter what the cost is (you know, like killing family members).

CTU Director:
Brian Hastings, bad posture and all, does have one thing going for him: he actually listens to Jack at times. That’s something that many other CTU directors (the alive ones) can’t say they’ve done.

Chloe utilization:
Not only do they shame one of our favorite characters into not knowing what she’s doing, but they also don’t give her much screen time. Where’s the Chloe we knew, with the great one-liners and beyond ridiculous hacking skills? I’m sure she’ll be back to save the day soon, but we’re getting anxious here.

Backdrop: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this season fails to capture the essence of New York. Most of the scenes look like the same backdrops we saw in Los Angeles. Season 7 did a great job of making the show actually seem like it was in Washington, D.C., but Season 8 might as well be in Milwaukee.

: Right now, I’m pegging Day 8 as ranking somewhere around the bottom of the list, when compared to other seasons. It’s definitely better than Season 6, which will forever preside at the bottom of the barrel. With Seasons 1 and 5 being the best and 2, 7, 4 and 3 (in that order) being in the middle of the pack, I’ve got to rank it in the middle of 3 and 4. And that’s only if it can up the ante and get some real fireworks going. Of course, much remains to be seen and the writers still have some tricks up their sleeve (remember, President Charles Logan will be back this season).

Next week, the powers that be are going to try and frame Renee Walker for all the bad things going on. Now this is where things might get interesting. Judging from the preview, Jack will take it upon himself to bounce Renee from CTU, which can only lead to him going off the grid to save the day himself, Renee in tow. Picture this, Jack and Renee gunning down bad guys and jumping from buildings right before they blow up. Sounds awesome, right? Anyway, we have a new main bad guy, Josef Bazhaev (David Anders) and he seems bent on either getting revenge for his brother’s death or on making as much money as possible. Here’s to the second third of the season taking us somewhere we haven’t been before
